But, you want them to. After all, that is the whole purpose behind picking good keywords. You WANT them to tell the search engines and the people who are searching for your type of goods or services about what you and your business have to offer and how that can help them solve a problem or fill a need.

But, just what are keywords and why are they important enough to warrant devoting your time and effort to choosing good ones for your business?

Simply put, keywords are the general words, or clusters of words, that you choose and enter in the keywords section of your website pages (and other pages that you may create) that describe your website and what you do in order for search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) and those who may conduct an internet search for your type of service or product to find your site on the web. You can use multiple keywords to describe your page as long as each word or group of words that you use are separated by a comma. Any words or clusters of words between commas is treated as a separate keyword.. Single words and short clusters of words are known as "short tail" keywords and longer, more specific clusters of words are known as "long tail" keywords.

For example, if you used the words "candy shop" as a keyword, it would be considered as a "short tail" keyword as it short and represents a more general description. If, however, you used "the best chocolate candy shop east of the Rockies", it is still considered as one keyword (if used between commas separating it from other keywords) even though it contains multiple words. This would be known as a "long tail" keyword. Unlike short tail keywords (which are more general), it is much more specific as to a description of your candy shop. This can limit the results of any searches for "candy shop", but the audience will be targeted to just those who search specifically for "the best chocolate candy shop east of the Rockies". A combination of both short and long tail keywords may work best for you.

As you can see, choosing appropriate keywords is important so that your potential customers and the various search engines can find you more easily on the web. They give a brief look into your business and what you offer.

It is important, too, that you use keywords that the most searchers would use when searching for your type of products or services. There are several free keyword generators available online which not only give you some keywords for your type of business, but ranks them by how frequently people use them when searching for that type of business or product. For example, a quick search for "free home based business keyword generator" reveals that the keyword "home based business" is far and away the top choice. However, "home based business opportunity" and "turnkey home based business" are also good choices for keywords.

Yes, the keywords that you choose to use in describing your business and products will "tell" on you. That is what their purpose is... to make it more likely that those searching for your type of goods or service will find you among the billion-plus websites on the internet today.
